If you're moving, renovating or simply looking for a space for your winter items, a self-storage facility like Melco Storage may be just what you're looking for. When packing your winter blankets for storage, you'll want to ensure that they are packed properly to preserve them flawlessly for the next winter onslaught. Here are some winning strategies to help you pack your winter blankets for the self-storage unit.

Get Them Cleaned

Like any item that goes into storage, you'll want to properly clean your winter blankets to prevent the growth of mould and mildew on them over time. Any type of dirt and grime on the blankets will attract other types of bacteria from the air of the storage unit, causing mould and mildew to grow on them. The way you clean your blankets will depend entirely on the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Some blankets may require dry cleaning, while others can be washed in a machine.

Dry Blankets

Before packing your blankets for the self-storage unit, you'll want to ensure they are completely dry. Wet blankets are full of moisture, which is highly conducive to the growth of mould and mildew. Make sure your blankets are dried properly. If they are dry cleaned, you will not have to worry. If your blankets are machine washed, let them dry on a clothesline outside your house or put them in a dryer for quicker results. Air-fluff the blankets after they dry, so they remain soft and comfortable.

Fold Blankets and Place in Vacuum Sealed Bag

Blankets are best stored when folded, so be sure to fold them gently. Position ink-free paper between every layer to add an additional protective layer for your blankets. Place these folded blankets into a vacuum sealed bag and seal it shut. Use a vacuum cleaner to suck all the remaining air out of the bag. Sucking all existing air from the bag removes any dirt, insects and moisture, so your blankets will stay clean and fresh until you use them once again. These vacuum bags also shrink in size, so you don't have to worry about them taking up much space in the self-storage unit.

Keep Blankets Away From Walls and Floors

You don't want your blankets to be placed directly on moisture-prone walls and floors, even if they are placed in vacuum sealed bags. Any moisture that seeps into your blanket will cause dampness, foul smells and mould –– all of which could potentially damage your blanket. Ideally, you'll want to place your blankets on top of heavier furniture items to prevent any direct contact with walls and floors.

Use these smart strategies when placing winter blankets in the self-storage unit.

About Me
Using Storage Strategically to Make Your House Feel Larger

Hi, my name is Kendall and welcome to my blog. I used to be a minimalist, and I still don't own much, but to let my children be true to who they are, I had to back down on my opinions and let them own stuff. However, the clutter drives me crazy. Because of that, I had to learn a bunch of storage tips. I use storage – both hired storage units and storage solutions in my own home – to make things feel more organised. By storing things discretely away, I also make the house feel larger. If you want tips from a lifelong minimalist and reluctant owner of tons of stuff, this blog is for you.
